#RPGaDAY 2017, Day 3: Finding Out About New Games

The #RPGaDAY writing prompt for today is "How do you find out about new roleplaying games?" -- a question I don't have a good answer for. I mean, I used to read message forums and know about cool things that way. I also used to enter the neighborhood bookstore and stumble across something new. This is how I found out about Shadowrun, through a copy of Bug City sitting on a shelf at a Hastings in a slowly-dying mall in Bryan, Texas. It's also how I found out about 7th Sea. (But that was at a used bookstore, a month or two after I discovered Shadowrun, so my big college era game was more cyberpunky than swashbuckly.) I guess these days it's social media. Well, that and working on layout for books then getting told what's coming out down the line but I can't tell anyone about it until the company makes an announcement. Mad Max and X-Wing, Sitting In a Tree…

Recently I was listening to Mynock Squadron, an X-Wing podcast, and am now in danger of spending way too much money on that game. I haven't played Fantasy Flight Games' X-Wing, but I have played Wings of War ((Now implemented as Wings of Glory. I've played both WoW and WoG. For this post, assume I'm referring to either game.)), the WW1/WW2 dogfighting game X-Wing was based on. ((Which is apropos, as the starship combat in Star Wars was based on dogfighting.)) X-Wing sounded cool to me, but I really only thought of the game as a Star Wars-themed WoW. Your guy is the plane, and the game is all about maneuvering and lining up that perfect shot. But listening to that podcast, I realized it was bigger than that: your ships could have different pilots with customizable loadouts. They were talking about trying out different pilots and kitting out ships with TLTs, HLCs, and other such jargon, and that got...

#RPGaDAY, Last Year: Day 3 – First RPG Purchased

It's the last of the pure reposts! I'm going over the writing prompts from last year, to see if my answers have changed at all. But I'm just doing reposts from my G+ feed for the first three entries as they're just about the first games I encountered. We've already gone over the first game played and first one I GMed. #RPGaDAY, Last Year: Day 3: What was the first roleplaying game you purchased? I’m going to skip past D&D because while I know that was the first one played, it was a gift. In those early days, we played a lot of D&D, but branched out and played quite a few other role-playing games like Rolemaster and Champions. I was also big into Car Wars, but… You know, it may have been Autoduel Champions. Or Villains & Vigilantes. Because it was so long ago, I’m not sure who owned what back then. (I recall AD&D books on the shelf, along with...
