Client: Magpie Games
Project Scope: Graphic design, layout.
Project Description: A monthly e-zine supporting the Fate RPG system.
The Fate Codex is an electronic-only publication (although designed with possible print version in mind) featuring articles, essays, short stories, and quick start adventures for Fate Core and Fate Accelerated Edition. The project was developed through a Patreon system. As the project reached different milestone goals, more content was added to the project. The first issue of The Fate Codex was 49 pages with a one-page cover.
The project’s direction was to have the look and feel be in the same vein as the official Fate books, but different enough to “be our own thing”. Development time was short on this project, and I am very happy with the results. After the initial rounds of layout treatments, we came up with a form factor that was similar to Fate Core, but a bit lighter. Jeremy Keller’s Fate Core Glyphs typeface was used as a major design element: chapter headers, end marks, and decorative elements in the page footer. Although presented in digest size, The Fate Codex incorporates several magazine-like elements, including the front cover, article blurbs in the table of contents, and callouts in the articles. This project also included logo and cover design.
